Faculty Mentors Program Update

The faculty mentor program continued growing with six new faculty mentors trained during January 2008. These new members - Frank Crocco, English; Eda Henao, Modern Languages; Bernardo Pace, English; Diane Simmons, English; Cynthia Wiseman, Developmental Skills; and Betsy Wissinger, Social Science - join 18 active faculty mentors, bringing the total number to 24 Title V Faculty Mentors.

Glenn Omatsu from California State University, Northridge, once again led the first day of training and helped mentors to focus on mentors they have had in the past in order to bring to consciousness the qualities and attributes they identified in their mentors and then to develop a working definition for the process of mentoring. In addition, the group discussed the concept of "mentoring on the run," the idea that once the qualities and attributes of the mentor are brought to consciousness, then mentoring can be done anytime, anywhere.

The faculty mentors will also recreate the mentoring workshop for BMCC faculty and staff. The date is TBA.

In addition to the training workshops, the faculty mentors have finished seven discipline guides, in Developmental Skills, English, Ethnic Studies, Math, Modern Languages, Science, Speech. These have been included in the Faculty Advisement Handbook and will soon be available electronically as well.
