Frequently Asked Questions

What is the role of the Educational Planner vis-à-vis the advisors?

The EPs will meet with the students to explain the data advisement sheet and explain CUNY placement scores. They will also inform students of college resources and if they need to be referred to another department. The EPs will assist the advisors in contacting students who have missed appointments. They will also act as liaisons to the advisors during the summer months.

What happens if my advisee goes somewhere else for advisement?

If the AATC discovers that a Title V student has already been advised by someone else, the Educational Planner will explain to the student that he/she MUST also see his/her Faculty Advisor, because the student is part of the Title V Program. If for some reason the student does not want to participate or if he/she prefers to be advised by someone else regularly, the EP should notify the project director. Unless this happens at the beginning of the semester, the change will take place the following semester and the EP will advise the student for the remainder of the current semester. This process should be explained to all advisees at the beginning of the term.

What if I want to remove a student from my cohort?

Inform the Educational Planner, who will then notify the committee. Again, unless this happens at the beginning of the semester, the change will take place the following semester, and the EP will advise the student for the remainder of the current semester.

What should I do if a student wants to change his/her major?

Notify your EP, and he/she will start the process to have the student removed from the Title V cohort. The EP will advise the student for the remainder of that semester.

What happens if my advisee has a problem I am not comfortable handling?

Please refer the students to the Counseling and Advisement Center to see a professional counselor. Make sure to note any and all referrals in Blackboard.

What should I do if my advisee cannot meet with me at the times I am available?

If you have already tried to accommodate the student with flexible office hours and email as an advisement tool, or if the advisee’s schedule has changed so that you can no longer meet with one another, then you should contact your EP. He/she will start the process to have the advisee switched to another faculty advisor at the beginning of the next semester. Until the change is made, the EP will meet with the student.

What if I have not been able to see each of my advisees for advisement before the end of the semester?

The EP’s are here during the entire academic year to assist you with your students during the winter break and summers.

After I advise the students, how do they register?

You will email your EP the names and social security numbers of the students you have advised. Each semester, Title V students will be given an early registration date. Provided they are advised before this date, they will be able to register online or in person with the EP on or after this date. Those registering after this date will be allowed to register 48 hours after advisement. Note: No student with a GPA lower than 2.0 is eligible for early registration.

What happens if I decide that I do not want to be a Title V advisor anymore?

We expect that advisors chosen for the program will commit for the life of the grant.

Does joining Title V affect my ability to do multiples and/or teach in the summer?

It may. You need to check with Human Resources.
