Being an Title V Advisor

The Faculty Cohorts will participate in developmental academic advisement training and will be instrumental in mentoring other faculty. The training will be a seminar (4 days) taught by professional consultants and in-house advisement staff and it will cover various topics such as developmental academic advisement, data advisement sheets, etc. The faculty who volunteer will receive a $2,000 stipend in two installments, one after the training, the second after the semester when they participate in the professional development model.

Participation in this activity will be given considerable weight by the college when faculty are reviewed for reappointment, tenure and promotion.

How is being a Title V faculty advisor different from regular advising?

Students and advisers are paired up according to a questionnaire based on availability and area of academic interest. Every advisor is assigned 25 to 30 students, who will then be contacted via email and/or telephone for appointments or group meetings. You will see the same group of students through their graduation from BMCC.

When in the semester and how often will I advise my students?

Meeting with students at the beginning and midway point of the semester to discuss Course selection, educational goals, transfer, CPE, etc is highly recommended. A minimum of two meetings each semester (either in person, or via telephone, email or Blackboard) is required. Any and all interactions must be recorded in Blackboard. Both students and advisors may ask to be reassigned, ideally at the beginning of the following semester.

What are some additional responsibilities for being a Title V faculty advisor?

You are required to attend additional workshops on specific advisement issues and updated BMCC policies and procedures. You will also be expected to contribute towards the development of a Faculty Academic Advisement Handbook and the discussion board on Blackboard.

Am I excused from regular advisement as a Title V advisor?

You are excused from assembly line advisement in your department during the early advisement period each semester. You are excused from January registration duties ONE TIME ONLY after you have completed the 3- day training workshop.
