CUNY Skills Assessment
WRITING SAMPLE
The Writing Sample is a direct assessment of students' writing skills. Students are presented a choice of two questions. The questions will include information about a decision that must be made by a group of people. The group must decide between two alternatives. The writer is asked to advise the group on the best choice and explain why the group should agree with the writer's position. In addition, the questions will specify the basis upon which the decision must be made. Essays are judged on the ability to address the question chosen, to develop and organize ideas, and to use correct English sentence structure, punctuation and grammar. The time allotted for this test is sixty minutes. Dictionaries are not allowed.
For strategies in taking the Writing test, see the CUNY Skills Assessment booklet.
