TECHNOLOGY FEE PROJECTS
President’s Advisory Committee on Technology—
Completion Report from 2005-2006
The President’s Advisory Committee on Technology1met during the Spring 2005 semester to recommend to the President a set of technology-related projects. These projects were intended to make the best use of the funds generated by the student technology fee to meet instructional and other student-related needs for the upcoming academic year.
1.

Self-service technology information for students—The basic design and content of this project were completed, and will be included in the overall revision and enhancement of all online information resources for students in 2006-2007.

2.

Student Technology Orientation (including flash drives)—5,000 flash drives were purchased to be distributed to students who complete orientations or take part in advanced research or scholarship projects.

3. Wiring college performance and public spaces for HDTV—The initial stage of this project was completed, with the final stages proposed for completion in 2006-2007.
4. E-portfolios—The E-Portfolio system software and hardware were purchased and installed, and the first group of students will begin using E-Portfolios in 2006-2007.

Online voting and survey system—Initial research indicated that this project should be included in a larger redesigned survey tool with classroom response systems, to be implemented in 2006-2007.

6. Expand printing capability on student workstations—All student workstations were equipped with expanded printing capability.
7. Instructional Server Upgrades/Replacement—The college library and media center servers were replaced and upgraded.
8. Wireless internet for classrooms and common areas—Wireless network access is available in all classrooms and common areas in the Murray St. and Chambers St. buildings.  Continued work to survey eliminate dead zones will take place in 2006-2007.
9. Upgrade/Increase Availability of Student Labs—Student open access labs were equipped with new computers and monitors, and hours of availability were increased.

Enhanced multimedia for distance learning and web-enhanced courses—Software licenses were renewed to allow multimedia streaming and web-based presentations for coursework.

11. Modernize the Learning Resource Center data infrastructure—The data wiring project for the Learning Resource Center was completed.
12. Enhance the college’s ability to stream live video—Hardware and software to stream live video of college events was purchased.
13.

Web-based student information services (Panther)—The online student information services were enhanced and upgraded for better functionality.


14. Laptop loaner program in library for students—The library purchased and made available loaner laptops for student use.
15. Calculator loaner Program—The library purchased and made available calculators for student use.
16. Fund to support student research projects—Funds were provided to purchase equipment and supplies for student honors projects in the sciences.
17.

Increase library e-subscriptions—Subscriptions were renewed and database access purchased to be provided to students.

18. Library renovation—The planning for the library renovation continued, and is ongoing into 2006-2007.
19. Expand Media Center loaner program—The media center expanded the availability of loaner equipment.
20. Upgrade student email system—Spam and junk mail filtering appliance was installed.
21. Continue to fund technological support staff—The college funded technical support staff for faculty development and student support, as well as upgrades and maintenance of instructional technology resources.
22. Continue to fund faculty/staff development initiatives—The college funded faculty development workshops and institutes, including the Integrating Technology in the Classroom Institute, and the annual Technology Day.
23. Reserve funds for University-wide Enterprise Initiatives—The college set aside mandated funding for CUNY Enterprise Initiatives.
