School Health Education (SHE)

School Health Education (SHE) is a professional field rapidly growing because of initiatives and policies recently enacted in order to address the growing number of school age children and adolescents afflicted with chronic diseases, such as asthma, diabetes, and obesity.

Description of SHE Profession:

Certified school health educators convey health information to students of public or private elementary, middle, and secondary schools. Training in school health education equips professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to develop, implement, and evaluate lesson plans that address the multiple dimensions of health. This preparation enables school health educators to effectively promote health and prevent disease among children, adolescents, and other populations.

SHE Academic Path:

BMCC’s School Health Education (SHE) Associate in Science (A.S.) Degree Program provides students with sound knowledge and practical skills. It also prepares students to continue in a teacher education program at a senior college in order to become certified in School Health Education (Pre-K to 12th Grade). BMCC has an articulation agreement currently in place that allows students in the School Health Education A.S. Degree Program to transfer seamlessly to York College’s School Health Education Bachelor in Science (B.S.) Degree Program.

In order to maintain eligibility in the program, students must earn a minimum grade of C or better in prerequisite and major courses. In order to transfer to a Bachelor in Science program, students must have a cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.75 or higher.

SHE Job Opportunities:
