Becoming a Student Success Leader is a wonderful opportunity for BMCC students who have successfully completed their first year of college. Whether or not you were in Strive for Success during your first year, you can apply to be a Student Success Leader during your second year.
What do Student Success Leaders do?
Student Success Leaders meet with first year BMCC students in the Strive for Success program and help them with problems they may be having registering for classes, applying for financial aid as well as answering general questions about college life.
How much time do the Student Success Leaders work mentoring new students?
Student Success Leaders work 12 hours a week in their position. They provide regular outreach, monthly workshops, and regular meetings with their caseloads (approximately 25 students each).
What are the benefits of becoming a Student Success Leader?
When you help others, it benefits you as well. Mentoring new students who are having problems with things you have already been through helps you grow as a person. This is an activity that will enhance your resume. Plus, Student Success Leaders make $12 per hour.
Are there any requirements to become a Student Success Leader?
Student Success Leaders must have successfully completed one full year at BMCC before they are eligible to work as peer mentors in the program. They must have a GPA of 2.7 or higher. The Student Success Leaders are selected through an application and interview process. Contact the campus coordinator to learn more about this opportunity.
Do Student Success Leaders get any special training for their role?
Student Success Leaders complete trainings with CARA (College Access: Research and Action). There is one week long training in August, and then periodic 1-2 day long trainings in October, January, and April.
