What is Single Stop?

Single Stop is a program that offers FREE screening for government benefits programs and free Tax Preparation and referrals to Legal and Financial Counseling.

What are the criteria to receive services from Single Stop?

Students of Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) must be matriculated and residing within the five boroughs of New York City in order to be screened for these services.

How long is the screening to obtain Single Stop services?

The initial screening takes a few short minutes.

What happens during a financial counseling session?

During a financial counseling session the student will work one-on-one with a personal financial coach. The student will establish goals to: increase savings, improve credit score, lower debt, and work towards financial security.

What kind of issues does the legal counseling cover?

Attorneys from The Legal Aid Society are at BMCC 4 hours a week. They provide counsel to student on a variety of legal issue. The core areas that The Legal Aid Society handles are: family, housing, consumer, health, immigration, employment, elderly, public benefits, and social security.

Can I receive Food Stamps if I am not a US citizen?

You most certainly can. Although legal residency is a criterion, you do not have to be a citizen to apply or receive food stamps.

How old do I have to be to apply for food stamps?

My friends told me that receiving government benefits affect me when I apply for citizenship. Is this true?

No. There is no penalty for applying for government benefits if you have established legal residency.

How much is the service?

The Single Stop services are absolutely FREE to the BMCC student.

Financial Counseling is provided by The NYLAG; Legal Services is provided by The Legal Aid Society; and tax preparation is provided by The Food Bank.
