Borough of Manhattan Community College is pleased to present a Directory of Community Services. This is created to provide our student body with opportunities to provide community service in their respective and other communities.
This resource tool is listed alphabetically, and the web links to some of these organizations are also provided. Included in the list are organizations that cater to the needs of all ages, genders, causes, religious affiliations, sexual orientation, to name a few. The college, through some of its offices, also provides opportunities for students to perform volunteer work.
Volunteering is a worthwhile, rewarding and gratifying experience. The sharing of your time, talent and other abilities for the benefit of others who are less fortunate, can reap rich dividends for all parties concerned. As a volunteer, you may gain technical, vocational and or professional experiences. Through this medium, you may even be successful at obtaining employment.
Also, by adding a diverse background of volunteer services to your credit, in conjunction with your scholastic achievements, your opportunities for receiving scholarships are greatly enhanced. Scholarship experts have said that, "scholarship committees want to give money to students who give back to their communities."
Various tutoring opportunities
Some volunteers serve on an ongoing basis while others help with short-term assignments or special events. Opportunities are available on weekdays, evenings and weekends, and include a variety of activities. If you have a few hours to spare, there is a volunteer opportunity here for you.
Lighthouse International enables people of all ages who are blind or partially sighted to lead independent and productive lives.
Literacy Partners teaches adults to read, write and do mathematics in tutorial and family literacy programs staffed by volunteers and professionals. It also leads a pioneering effort to research, develop and disseminate the best program practices locally and nationally.
Refugee settlement
Weekend meal delivery
Volunteer opportunities are varied and include assignments in key patient areas. Volunteers help escort patients, deliver flowers, staff the library, and act as couriers.
Varied
Volunteers receive pre-service and in-service training in such topics as: the aging process, needs of visually impaired older adults, sighted guide techniques, roles of the volunteer, the volunteer/client relationship, community resources and how to obtain them, volunteer safety in other peoples’ homes and in the street, and multi-cultural sensitivity.
Nazareth Housing is a private, non-sectarian agency that serves the needs of the multi-ethnic community in one of the poorest sections of Manhattan. We provide transitional housing to homeless families, most often women under 21 with young children.
