Join CSTEP

How do I join CSTEP?

  • Meet the eligibility requirements
  • Determine membership type: Basic or Research
  • Complete the CSTEP Application

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must identify as African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American or Alaskan Native to qualify as a member of an underrepresented group in CSTEP. If you not do not identify as any of these groups, you can also joing the program if you meet economic eligibility. To determine economic eligibility see the Economic Eligibility page.
  • Must be a NY State resident for at least one year in order to apply for CSTEP.
  • Must be a degree-seeking student to be eligible to apply for CSTEP.
  • Must maintain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of atleast 2.75 to be eligible to apply for CSTEP. First semester Freshman students who are not taking any remedial courses are considered to be in good academic standing.
  • Must be a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math major
  • Must be a full-time student (registered for at least 12 credits) to be eligible to apply for CSTEP.

Membership Types

 

Basic Membership 

The basic membership is for students who are interested in participating in CSTEP but do not have the time to dedicate to a research project. Those who choose this membership will have the opportunity to participate in career and employment opportunities, and field trips to local conferences and/or higher educational institutions that offer STEM related activities. Students with Basic CSTEP memberships are required to attend CSTEP workshops held on Wednesdays during BMCC Club Hours and apply for summer internships.

Membership Requirements:

  • Maintain at least a 2.75 GPA.
  • Have a valid e-mail address and phone number.
  • Participate in at least five CSTEP workshops each semester.

Research Membership

The research membership is for students who are interested in participating in a hands-on, one-on-one research project with a BMCC faculty mentor in Science, Mathematics, Social Sciences and Human Services, Computer Information Systems, Health Education, Nursing, and Media Arts and Technology departments. 

Research Membership Requirements:

  • Maintain at least a 2.75 GPA.
  • Have a valid e-mail address and phone number
  • Participate in all weekly CSTEP workshops each semester.
  • Commit to spend from 6-15 hours a week working on a Research Project with a CSTEP Mentor from the BMCC faculty or staff.
  • Commit to do an oral PowerPoint presentation at the end of each semester, and a Poster presentation at the BMCC Annual Student Research Poster Presentation in March.

If all research and presentation requirements have been completed at the end of the participating semester, CSTEP Research students receive a stipend.
