All You Need to Know about ePermit

BMCC students may sometimes find it useful to take a class at another CUNY institution.  If you are interested in doing so, you can file an “ePermit” application through the CUNY portal.

To be eligible to take a course on permit at another CUNY college:

  • Students must have a 2.0 (or higher) cumulative grade point average.
  • Students must currently be a matriculated student at BMCC.
  • Students cannot have any financial holds on their records.
  • All immunization requirements must be met.
  • ePermits will not be approved for 1st semester students.

Students must have completed all necessary prerequisites for the BMCC equivalent course.

All credits and grades of courses taken at the host institution on permit will be transferred to the student’s record and included in their cumulative grade point average.

Please be aware that an approved ePermit does not guarantee you a seat at the other institution, it only guarantees that BMCC will accept the transfer credit of the course you take.

Tuition for classes taken on ePermit will appear on your BMCC bill.

To file an ePermit follow these steps

1. Go to the CUNY homepage ( www.cuny.edu )

2. Logon to your CUNY Portal account

3. At the CUNY Portal home page, click on the "ePermit" link.

4. The ePermit page login will open.  Re-enter your "Username" and "Password"

5. On the ePermit home page click on “Create New Permit,” on the menu on the left side of the screen.

For more detailed instructions please click on our “How to Apply for an ePermit” page.

To know what courses at other institutions are equivalent to courses at BMCC you should use the CUNY TIPPS website at http://tipps.cuny.edu/.  This site will help you make sure you are applying for the correct course at the other institution.  For more detailed instructions please see our “How to Search for Course Equivalencies on CUNY TIPPS” page.

Frequently asked Questions

Can I take a course that is not part of my graduation requirements at BMCC?

Students are permitted to take courses that are not required for graduation at thier home college. However, it is possible that taking courses outside of your major can have a negative impact on a student's financial aid. Students should always check with the Financial Aid office to discover if there could be any potential impact when taking courses outside of their major.

I tried to file an ePermit and I received an error message stating that the term is not valid even though I selected the proper term.  How can I fix this?

Your CUNY Portal account is not properly configured.  In order to apply for an ePermit, BMCC must be set as your “Primary College.”  In order to fix this go to your CUNY Portal home page and click “My Profile.”  On the next screen click “Modify.”  Select Borough of Manhattan Community College from the drop down menu that appears next to “Primary College” and click “Save.”  You will now be able to apply for an ePermit.

What if I want to cancel an ePermit that has already been approved?

If the semester that the permit has been approved for has not yet started then you can simply login to the ePermit system through the CUNY Portal and cancel the ePermit.  If the semester has already started then you must follow the Host College’s procedure for dropping courses and bring proof to the BMCC Registrar that the class has been dropped.

How many courses can I take on ePermit?

There is no limit to how many classes a student may take on ePermit except for the credit limit for the semester.  Students can take a combination of ePermit and BMCC courses up to the following limits per semester:

  • Spring & Fall = 18 credits
  • Summer = 21 credits
  • Winter = 4 credits
