About Online Tutoring

Student

Online Tutoring is one of the many ways that BMCC is extending its academics support services to students to make their college career a success. Online Tutoring provides students with live online tutorial sessions from anywhere they have internet access, as well as E-Tutoring (email tutoring) services.

What is Live Online Tutoring?

Live online tutoring utilizes audio, visual, electronic whiteboard and chat technology to provide students with virtual tutoring sessions anywhere they have internet access. Students can register for a virtual tutoring appointment or participate in live chat sessions with a certified tutor.

What is the difference between Live Online Tutoring and E-Tutoring?

Live online tutoring utilizes audio, visual, electronic whiteboard and chat technology to provide students with virtual tutoring sessions anywhere they have internet access.  Students can register for a virtual tutoring appointment or participate in live chat sessions with a certified tutor.

E-Tutoring is an e-mail based form of online tutoring available to all BMCC students. E-Tutoring allows students to email a tutoring question* or written assignment to the college’s e-tutors for evaluation. E-tutoring questions are responded to within 24 hours of receipt Monday to Friday. Note: Questions submitted during the weekend, if not answered within 24 hours, will be answered on the following Monday except when classes are not in session.

Who will be tutoring me online?

All of BMCC’s certified tutors are dynamic individuals hired by subject. Tutors assist students in improving their understanding of course work. Online tutors at BMCC are required to meet strict qualifications and are constantly evaluated to ensure they are providing the best possible assistance.

When should I use Online Tutoring?

Students who are unable to attend tutoring sessions on campus or just prefer to learn in their own comfort zone are encouraged to utilize online tutorial services.

E-Tutoring is available 24/7 and can be used if there is no tutoring or chat session when you need assistance, or if you just have a quick question regarding a difficult topic in your coursework.

How does E-tutoring Work?

Students can submit a specific question regarding the course work in one of their classes or submit a written assignment for E-Tutoring at www.bmcc.cuny.edu/etutoring
When submitting your question, you should:

  • Be specific about the difficulties you are having with course content.  For example: “What is a thesis statement?” is a good question because the student specifies that s/he is having a problem understanding the definition of a thesis statement.  A question such as “I am en-countering problems writing my report. Do you have any suggestions?” does not specify the area of difficulty.
  • Include assignment, textbook name and edition, page number, and any other relevant materials.
  • Provide a valid e-mail address and ensure that you have sufficient space to receive your e-tutor’s feedback.
  • Demonstrate a satisfactory attempt to do your homework. Attempting to do your homework will indicate to the e-tutor your desire to learn and that you have read the textbook chapters.

How does Live Online Tutoring Work?

Students can sign up for live tutoring sessions via a fully interactive, virtual environment where they can meet with a tutor one-on-one or in a group.  Students should have access to a computer* equipped with a microphone and webcam and their tutoring link(supplied upon registration) to access the online session. Upon signing into an online tutoring session students must display their BMCC ID card on the webcam for verification by the tutor. In order to continuously improve online tutoring services, students are asked to complete a quick survey about the services they receive upon completion of an online tutoring session.

*Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets can be used as well, but may restrict students’ ability to communicate in real time depending on the session

Is online tutoring a good option for me?

The e-learning readiness checklist self-check will help you decide if an online tutoring session would be a good option for you. It should take about 5 minutes and will give you an idea of what would be involved in receiving tutoring online. In addition, if you are interested in taking an online or partially online (hybrid) e-learning course at BMCC, you must complete this self-check before you register.
