Scholarships and Awards

Who Is Eligible:

The Harlem Commonwealth Council Scholarship Program offers financial assistance to Borough of Manhattan Community College students who currently reside between 106th and 155th Streets in Manhattan and are majoring in Nursing.

  • Your essay describing your goals and aspirations.
  • proof of address.
  • Passport size photo.

Amount: Up to $1,500 per semester

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must:
1. Be a Nursing or Respiratory Therapy major.
2. Live in Manhattan between 106th and 155th Streets.
3. Have U.S. citizen or a permanent resident status.
4. Write an essay describing your goals and aspirations.

As part of the selection process, candidates will be required to be interviewed by the President of the Harlem Commonwealth Council.

NBNA Scholarship Program

Who Is Eligible:

The National Black Nurses Association, Inc. offers various scholarships each year.

  1. Candidate must be currently enrolled in a nursing program (B.S.N., A.D., Diploma or L.P.N. / L.V.N.) and in good scholastic standing at the time of application.
  2. Must be a member of NBNA and a member of a local chapter (if one exists in your area).
  3. Applicant must have at least one full year of school remaining.

  1. Official Transcript(s) from an accredited School of Nursing.
  2. Two (2) page Written Essay (click here for more information).
  3. Two (2) letters of recommendation (one from applicant's school of nursing and one from the local chapter, or a nurse in the area if a local chapter does not exist). Letters of recommendation and essay must be attached to the application.
  4. Additional items to accompany the application in support of the candidates eligibility and desirability may include documented evidence of:
       a. participation in student nurse activities and
       b. involvement in the African American Community, i.e., letters, news clippings, awards,
           certificates, etc.

Who Is Eligible:

U.S. citizens and students with an Alien Registration number currently enrolled in state-approved schools of nursing or pre-nursing in associate degree, baccalaureate, diploma, generic doctorate, and generic master's programs. Funds are not available for graduate study unless it is for a first degree in nursing.

Accelerated BSN students are eligible to apply for the scholarships by providing proof of acceptance and or enrollment in a state approved nursing school, in addition to all other required documents.


The scholarships are based on academic achievement, financial need, and involvement in nursing student organizations and community activities related to health care. Additional criteria may be required by some sponsors.

The completed application must be accompanied by a $10 processing fee.

All applicants must submit a copy of their recent nursing school and college transcripts, or grade report. NSNA members must submit proof of their membership. Registered nurses in baccalaureate programs and licensed practical/vocational nurses in programs leading to registered nurse licensure must submit a copy of their license to be considered for the Career Mobility Scholarships.
