| COLLEGE-WIDE LEARNING ASSISTANCE TRAINING COMMITTEE |
| Goal/Purpose |
| The College-wide Learning Assistance Training
Committee is responsible for coordinating BMCC tutoring, tutorial
policies and procedures. The committee is composed of tutorial coordinators,
supervisors and faculty liaisons and is chaired by Dean Michael Gillespie
and Dean Erwin Wong. Training sessions are held on two Saturdays each
semester to provide learning assistants who are new to BMCC with the
instruction and assistance necessary for them to be effective and
successful tutors. To support this effort, the committee has developed
a training videotape entitled “The Role of a BMCC Tutor.”
The tape introduces new tutors to roles and responsibilities of being
a BMCC learning assistant. It is incorporated into the training sessions
where tutors are able to ask questions and receive answers in all
subject areas. At the training sessions new tutors are provided with
printed materials they can refer to later including a tutor orientation
manual, sexual harassment and disabled student services handouts. |
| The committee also conducts a three-hour
training session for all experienced BMCC learning assistants during
their third semester of employment. The workshop focuses on managing
a group tutoring session and their development as tutors. The committee
has also developed several videotapes to facilitate this workshop.
They are “Managing a Group Session” and “Cultural
Diversity.” |
