Welcome to the Learning Academy

The BMCC Learning Academy offers first-time, full-time, liberal arts students a seamless transition from high school to college. As members of the BMCC Learning Academy program, students are assigned to a designated advisor throughout their time at BMCC. The BMCC Learning Academy advisor helps each student navigate the transition to college, including providing academic advisement, registration, offering academic success workshops, career and major exploration, tutoring and learning resources, and referrals to other campus resources.

Students will participate in a two-semester workshop taught by a BMCC Learning Academy program advisor. This workshop will cover topics related to navigating the college process, time management, transferring, and career exploration. After a student’s first year of study, students will begin to meet with our second-year advisors who will work closely with students on applying to senior level colleges and choosing appropriate career paths.

Dear Student,
Congratulations and welcome to the Borough of Manhattan Community College!

The BMCC Learning Academy is pleased to invite you to join our program. The BMCC Learning Academy is an academic success program designed specifically for Liberal Arts students. We want to support and help you transition to college life, explore all your academic choices and connect you with faculty mentors and students who share similar interests.

We will help you explore the following Liberal Arts interests:

  • Visual, Performing Arts and Music
  • Anthropology and Languages of the World
  • U.S. History and Government
  • Sociology, Psychology and other Social Sciences
  • Science, Math and Technology

You will work closely with your designated advisor to determine which field of study will best suit your interests and professional goals. Your advisor will be able to refer you to resources, including, the Office of Career Development, the Scholarship Office, and the Learning Resource Center. Students participating in the BMCC Learning Academy will connect with the BMCC campus and their classmates better during the academic year through one of two approaches:

BMCC Learning Academy-Specific Course Pairs: Students in this type of cohort will enroll in two (2) Learning Academy-specific paired courses as well as a BMCC Learning Academy workshop hour. Enrolled students will participate in all three of these as a group, creating a small learning community. Faculty will work together to align the curriculum for the courses and will collaborate with the BMCC Learning Academy advisor regarding student progress.

BMCC Learning Academy-Specific Course Sections: Students in this type of cohort will enroll in one (1) Learning Academy-Specific course as well as a BMCC Learning Academy workshop hour. Enrolled students will participate in both of these as a group, creating a small learning community. Faculty will collaborate with the BMCC Learning Academy advisor regarding student progress.

Students will be enrolled in Learning Academy-specific pairs or sections of basic skills and social science courses based on availability, interests and course placement. Students will work with BMCC Learning Academy advisors to choose additional courses to complete a full-time registration based on individual needs and goals.

About the BMCC Learning Academy Course: During the first semester of the BMCC Learning Academy workshop, students will cover topics such as student services, college policies, time management and study strategies. They will be acquainted with student service departments around campus and become familiarized with college life. The second semester of the BMCC Learning Academy workshop prepares students through career exploration, the transfer process, and professional networking. The workshop is a wonderful opportunity for students to interact with a small group of students and their advisor while adjusting to the rigors of college.
