DUTIES:

The Manhattan Educational Opportunity Center (MEOC) was established in 1966 by the State University of New York (SUNY) as the Urban Center in Manhattan, as a result of an act of the New York State Legislature. The MEOC has been funded by the State University of New York University Center for Academic and Workforce Development (SUNY-UCAWD) and administered by Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) of the City University of New York during its entire history.

For over 50 years, the MEOC has provided a variety of educational and training services to all eligible candidates without discrimination. We encourage all races, ethnicities, religions, genders, persons with disabilities, persons who speak multiple languages, and veterans to apply.

General Description:

The MEOC seeks tutors to work with all levels of adult learners. 

Tutor adults in various academic areas with a focus on math, writing, science and English language acquisition.

Conduct one-on-one and/or small-group tutoring.

Employ curriculum materials in response to student needs, and create handouts, prompts, and assignments as needed.   

Adapt to changing student needs, requests, opportunities, and challenges. 

Motivate students to take advantage of tutoring services and other academic supports. 

Keeps records, take attendance, enter attendance into a data system, distribute forms, and collect forms.

Maintain confidentiality of student records, as appropriate. 

Campus Specific Information:

The MEOC seeks staff members at all levels who are dedicated to improving the educational and vocational opportunities of adult learners in New York City.

The MEOC seeks tutors in the areas of developmental and/or college preparation reading, writing and math.

The Manhattan Educational Opportunity Center is located in Harlem on 125th Street.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications: 64 college credits required. Ability to communicate effectively individually and with groups, orally and in writing. 

Substantial knowledge of a particular subject matter.  

Computer proficient.  Must be able to work a flexible schedule.

Excellent communication skills as well as professionalism are required.  

Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they possess sufficient  skills to perform the duties of the job to which they are assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree preferred and knowledge and familiarity with the High School Equivalency Exams such as the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) and college entrance exams such as the CUNY Assessment Tests is preferred. 

Prior tutoring and/or teaching experience is preferred.

Must demonstrate sufficient skills to perform the duties of the assigned tasks.

Fingerprinting fee is required for all applicants.

SALARY:

Compensation is commensurate with level of education.

Under 64 credits: $12.27

64 or more credits, up to an Associates: $12.53

BA: $13.45

MA: $14.78

PhD: $16.51

Tutors work up to 19 hours a week.
