Health Benefits for Adjuncts

Health insurance coverage is available to eligible Adjuncts through the PSC/CUNY Welfare Fund who are not covered by another source. Persons working for another employer who is providing or could provide health insurance or who may be covered by a spouse’s health coverage may not receive this benefit.

To be eligible for this benefit, the adjunct must be paid with tax-levy money (not Research Foundation or Grants) and must meet the following requirements:

Teaching adjuncts- Teaching six (6) or more hours per semester and teaching (or the equivalent) at any CUNY college in the semester of the proposed coverage and who have taught at any CUNY college in the two semesters* immediately preceding the semester of coverage.

Non-teaching adjuncts- Working ten or more hours per week at any CUNY college for two complete consecutive semesters, followed by working ten or more hours per week at any CUNY college in the semester* of proposed coverage.

*Summer sessions are excluded for purposes of determining eligibility.

Coverage Options
Residents of New York City and some contiguous areas of New Jersey may select either:

Persons in the tri-state area but outside the listed service area have the opportunity to enroll in either a Blue Cross Preferred Provider Organization or a Blue Cross Exclusive Provider Organization, depending on their service area. These options are free of premium charge to the individual.

Covered adjuncts may purchase coverage for their family:

HIP: $1,972.14 (Quarterly Premium)
Blue Cross HMO $2,187.51 (Quarterly Premium)
Family coverage checks should be made payable to the PSC-CUNY Welfare Fund for the first quarter’s premium.

Enrollment Process
First-time enrollees must complete and return the application to Human Resources. The college will need to verify that requirements have been met. If continuity and current hours necessarily involve more than one college, verification will be required from each. Applicants will be notified by the PSC-CUNY Welfare Fund, and/or the carrier, of acceptance.

If the Family premium option is selected, a check covering the first 3 months is required.

If you sign up for coverage in the fall semester, you are covered until January 31st of the following year. If you sign up in the spring semester, you are covered until August 31st of that year.

For information regarding eligibility, see the Benefits Officer, Amparo Lopez-Moreno in room S714. Employees teaching at more than one college may need to contact the Benefits Officer at each school to certify eligibility.

Loss of Coverage
Once you are eligible, coverage continues until a semester where insufficient hours are worked or other coverage becomes available.

If you are working less than six hours at one college, and you are working the necessary additional hours at another, YOU must inform the PSC/CUNY and both colleges that you qualify for benefits. If you do not, and a college reports that you are teaching less than six hours, your health coverage will be terminated.

IF you lose coverage, you may qualify for COBRA (continuation of health insurance at 102% cost).
