COLLEGE DISCOVERY (CD) --

a special program funded by New York State for financially and educationally disadvantaged students. Students who are in the CD program may receive money for books and fees. How am I selected for the program?
You must indicate on your freshman admissions application that you want to be considered for the CD program when you first apply to the College. The Office of Admissions then chooses the students to be admitted into the CD program by a lottery system.

How do I find out if I am enrolled in the program?
When you receive your notification of acceptance to BMCC, you will also be notified whether or not you have been selected for the CD program. At this stage, acceptance into the CD program means that you have met the academic requirements for program eligibility. It remains for you to meet separate financial eligibility requirements by filing the appropriate financial aid applications. REMEMBER: You must meet both academic and financial eligibility requirements in order for you to participate in the CD program.

What financial Aid applications must I file to establish my eligibility for the CD Program?
In order to establish your eligibility for CD financial aid, you must file a FAFSA and a TAP Application. The Office of Financial Aid will instruct you what additional documentation you will have to submit.

Once your applications are processed and your CD eligibility determined, you will receive an award letter from the Financial Aid Office. You may also check your award status on PANTHER -- the online student information system. Access PANTHER from the BMCC Home Page.

How often do I file for CD financial aid?
If you want CD funding, you must file your financial aid applications once every academic year for the time you are enrolled at BMCC.

What kinds of financial aid can I get as a CD student?
You most probably will receive TAP and PELL. If you are found to be eligible for CD financial aid, the CD program may provide you money for books and will pay your school fees. You may be able to receive other campus-based aid along with your TAP, PELL and CD awards, such as FWS or Federal Perkins Loan. You are encouraged to file for other grants or loans described in this guide.

When do I receive my CD book and fee money?
CD book money is disbursed twice a year, once at the beginning of each semester according to the following Financial Aid Disbursement Schedule. Fees are paid directly to the College twice a year.

How many credits do I have to take to be eligible for CD financial aid?
You must register and maintain enrollment as a full-time student in order to be eligible for CD.

If, for any reason, your course load falls below 12 credits or equated credits, but not fewer than 9, you must see your CD counselor to verify your continued eligibility for program funds.

If you are in your graduating semester, you may register for less than a full-time course load, but you must get permission from your CD counselor first.

What if I go to summer school?
You may be eligible to receive CD financial aid (books and fees) for attending summer classes. Eligible summer school enrollment is 6 or more credits or equated credits. You must file your financial aid applications before the summer school deadline (as established by the Financial Aid Office) in order to receive these funds.

What if I transfer?
In some cases, it may be possible for you, as a CD student, to continue in a special program at another college. If you are transferring to another school, be sure to discuss your plans with your CD counselor.
