Federal Direct PLUS Loan

Can my parents defer repayment of this loan?

Yes. Your parents have the option of deferring repayment on a Direct PLUS loan while you are in-school and for a six-month grace period after you graduate or drop below full-time enrollment.

Payments can also be deferred if your parents are themselves enrolled in college, but they would need to submit an application for an in-school deferment.

Interest continues to accumulate and will be capitalized (or added to the principal) if your parents choose not to make interest payments.

There are other conditions, such as unemployment, that may warrant a deferment on PLUS Loan payments.  See the Student Loan Deferment and Cancellation Summaries page for a complete list of deferments for Direct PLUS Loan borrowers.

What if my parents have trouble making their loan payments?
