Globalization at BMCC and Beyond

Geographic Information Science (GIS) is a new Associate in Science degree program at BMCC. A rapidly growing field in the scientific and technological sectors, GIS develops and uses information science in order to address the challenges of geography and earth science. Professors Ching-Song D. Wei (Computer Science), Yan Chen (Computer Information Systems), Patricia Mathews-Salaza (Social Sciences and Human Services) and Paula Saunders (Social Sciences and Human Services) spoke about this new degree program at BMCC’s 2nd Globalization Day on April 29, 2013.

Latino Studies Conference and FIG at BMCC

We had been discussing the legacy of writer Piri Thomas at a meeting of the Cross-Cultural Approaches to Latino/a Studies Faculty Interest Group (FIG) when Prof. Rosario Torres Guevara (Developmental Skills) came up with the idea for a conference at BMCC. “Beyond Access: Latino Education and the Community College” was the topic for the first inaugural conference, held on November 14 and 15, 2013.

Technology Day: Focus on E-Learning

E-learning is “at the forefront of education globally,” according to Ms. Janey Flanagan, Director of the E-Learning Center, plenary speaker at this year’s annual BMCC Technology Day. The March 31, 2011 event, whose theme “E-Learning Comes of Age: What’s on the Horizon?” enabled faculty and staff to learn about and share E-learning practices as well as strategies to use technology in the traditional classroom.

“Motivating Students, Motivating Us” was the theme of this year’s annual Joe Doctor Colloquium. Sixty-four faculty members, both part- and full-time attended the event, held on May 2, 2012. Presentations and breakout discussion sessions focused on ways to enhance students’ motivation.

Creative Arts and Crafts Day 2012

Creativity flowed in the Richard Harris Terrace on Creative Arts and Crafts Day, March 21, 2012. The day’s event, organized by Prof. Zhanna Yablokova (English) and Prof. Thaddeus Radell (Music and Art) included presentations by over 30 participants displaying their talents in visual arts, handcrafts, music, vocal, and dance performances, poetry and translation readings, dramatic monologues, and culinary skills.

BMCC Faculty and Staff seeking to publish books for the first time were provided with information and encouragement at Publications Day, held at CETLS on March 27, 2012. Creative writing and text book publishing were also discussed. Publications Day was facilitated by Prof. Phyllis Niles (Library) and Prof. Charlie Post (Social Sciences).

E-Learning Symposium Digital Praxis: Lived Experiences, Future Strategies

The E-Learning Center hosted BMCC’s first E-Learning Symposium on March 24, 2014. The theme of the event was “Digital Praxis: Lived Experiences, Future Strategies.” Faculty and staff shared their ideas about e-learning course teaching strategies. Ideas discussed included effective ways to involve students in meaningful discussions, how to support students who stop “coming” to class, and ways to turn potentially controversial topics into teachable moments in the online environment.

Sustainability Fair Poster Session 2014

It isn’t easy being green, but at the 2014 BMCC Sustainability Fair on April 28, BMCC faculty, staff, and students showcased that they are doing their part. BMCC faculty mentored students to conduct research and present posters on a variety of topics from heavy metal pollutants, to water quality at BMCC, to solar panel tracking systems.
