| What is Distance Learning? |
| BMCC's distance learning classes use the Internet for
teaching and learning. |
| You can: |
| - |
Find your class materials 24/7 |
| - |
Do your course work at any hour of
the day or night |
| - |
Hand in your homework and assignments
via the Internet, and |
| - |
Take most of your exams on the Internet,
too. |
| How is distance learning
the same as on-site (classroom) learning? |
| - |
The calendar is the same. Online
classes begin and end at the same time as on-site classes. |
| - |
The final exam schedule is the same.
Some online classes have on-site finals. |
| - |
The academic requirements are
the same as on-site courses. Your reading list and workload
are the equivalent of on-site courses. |
| - |
The cost per credit is the same. |
| How is distance learning
different from on-site learning? |
| - |
There is harldly ever a reason to
be "absent" from class. |
| - |
There are no "snow days"on
the Internet. |
| - |
You communicate with your instructor
and fellow classmates in writing only. |
| - |
You rarely if ever hear a voice.
You have to read what the instructor and your classmates have
to say. |
| Is distance learning easier than on-site
learning? |
No.
Students often think the course will be easier, but it isn't.
In fact, it is sometimes harder. Since there are no class meetings,
the only way you are "present" is if you write your
thoughts down and send them to the class. This requires thoughtfulness
and time. You probably spend about the same time on reading
and assignments as you would in a classroom-based class, and
the writing probably takes about the same time as sitting in
a classroom would, but some people experience distance learning
as being more intense. |
