The English as a Second Language component of the Department of Developmental Skills provides developmental writing instruction to BMCC students who have taken but not yet passed the CUNY Assessment Test in Writing (CATW) and whose first language is not English. Students are placed in the appropriate level of ESL based on their CATW and reading score. There are four levels of ESL, ranging from low-intermediate to advanced: ESL054/049, ESL062, ESL094, and ESL095.
There are currently 20 full-time ESL faculty members and 39 ESL adjuncts and 3 full-time substitutes.
In a given semester, there are typically between 1,200 and 1,500 students registered in ESL courses at BMCC. Our students come from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, contributing to the rich diversity of the college.
The ESL Lab is a computer lab dedicated to serving the needs of students enrolled in ESL courses. Located on the 5th floor (S500), the Lab provides ESL students with convenient access to computers and other valuable resources, including educational software and tutoring.
