CPE APPEALS
CPE Appeals should be submitted by:

September 15th for the Fall CPE

December 1st for the Winter CPE

January 7th for the Spring CPE, and

May 1st for the Summer CPE

All appeals must be made in writing by students to the BMCC CPE Appeals Committee. The CPE Appeals form is available from the Registrar’s Office (S-310), Testing Office (N-700) or you can download the appeals form.

Please type or print clearly. Be sure that all contact information (SS#, address, telephone number, e-mail, etc.) is accurate and up-to-date. The completed Appeals Form should be submitted to the Dean of Academic Affairs (S-724).

Students are encouraged to present as convincing and thorough a case as possible to support their appeal. Please provide details and documentation, if applicable.

A statement in support from the CPE Advisor in their major or program is required. All letters and statements to the CPE Appeals Committee should be typed.

For help in completing the CPE Appeals Form students should see the CPE Advisor in their major or program.

The Committee will consider the following appeals from students who wish:
1.
To take the exam before the 45th credit is attempted
A student may appeal in writing to take the exam earlier than the semester in which the 45th credit is attempted if: a) the student has earned C or better in at least two writing or writing intensive courses; b) the student has completed the basic skills requirements in reading and writing; and c) the 60th credit can be completed during the next semester.
2. To take the exam while not in good academic standing
Students whose grade point average is below 2.0 (ordinarily not below 1.8) may appeal in writing to take the exam if they have completed at least 45 credits successfully and can show evidence of competence in reading and writing (e.g., grades of B or higher in at least two writing or writing intensive courses).
3. To postpone a required testing
Students seeking to postpone a required testing must state in writing the reason for the request, provide evidence (documentation) of the circumstances that will prevent them from taking the exam on schedule, and agree to take it at the next administration. Only serious circumstances will be considered. If a postponement is granted, failure to take the CPE as required will lead to a forfeit (failure) and the loss of one of the student’s three opportunities to take and pass the exam.
4. To remove a forfeiture
Students appealing a forfeit must state in writing the reason for the absence, present evidence (documentation) of the circumstances that prevented their attendance, and agree to take the exam at the next administration. If a forfeit is removed, failure to take the CPE as required will mean that the student will again forfeit (fail) and lose one of their opportunities to take and pass the exam. Please note that students who miss a second required administration must register for a writing-intensive or other appropriate class.
5. To remain matriculated
Students who have failed the CPE three (3) times become non-matriculated (non-degree) automatically unless they file an appeal to remain matriculated. Students who fail the CPE four (4) or more times cannot remain matriculated. Once a non-matriculated student passes the CPE, the student’s status can change back to matriculated.
6. To remain matriculated and take a fourth attempt
Students must have earned C or better in writing or writing-intensive courses. Permission, if granted, will require a writing-intensive course and/or other appropriate intervention. The Committee has discretion to permit continued registration until this testing has been completed.
7. To take the CPE a fourth (or more) time as a non-degree student
Students must present compelling evidence of additional intervention, course completed successfully at another institution, or other evidence of improved proficiency.
8. Other
Students need to explain their situation in detail and clearly state what they are asking from the Committee.
