Coping with Recent News and Events



Recent news coverage has been filled with reports of violence in the United States as well as abroad. The staff at the BMCC Counseling Center is available for any student who would like to discuss their feelings about current events and how it may be affecting their daily routine.

Some of you may experience emotional and physical reactions such as anger, fear, sadness, grief, and hopelessness—these are normal responses to traumatic events. You do not need to be directly involved in or have witnessed the event to be affected.

Should you experience such reactions it is vitally important that you engage in good self-care such as talking to people you trust, getting enough rest and exercise, and spending time doing things that you enjoy. Often these reactions are temporary and people return to their typical routines.

Some people find that they experience a reaction months or weeks after the event—if that is the case it is important to receive professional help.

The Counseling Center is a safe space for students to speak in confidence about their concerns about oppression and violence in all forms. We are committed to offering non-judgmental and empathic counseling services to students.

Friday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
(last appointment is at 4:30 p.m.)
Saturday & Sunday: Closed

After hours, students can speak to an after-hours crisis counselor by calling (212) 220-8140 and pressing “2”.
