Academic Dismissal
Academic dismissal occurs when a student falls below minimum
retention standards for two consecutive semesters. A student may not
return to BMCC until an appeal is filed and approved.
Sometimes, there may be extenuating factors that affect the student's
ability to perform at a higher level. These factors can impede the
ability to focus and maintain minimum grade expectations.
In appealing a dismissal the student should speak with a counselor
and discuss the situation. The counselor can help you prepare a statement
for the appeal. The counselor will also make a recommendation to the
committee regarding your appeal.
You can expedite the process by writing a summary or a paragraph about
the nature of the situation explaining what happened, why your grades
were affected, and what will be different when reinstated.
For more information about filing an appeal, see the colleges'
academic Rules
& Regulations.
