My
Vassar Experience
In the summer of 2003 I entered BMCC after being informed that I would
need to take a remedial class. I entered the class feeling frustrated
and behind and hoping to "just pass". Thanks to the College Discovery
program I did more than "just pass."
Fast forward to this summer ('04) when I had an amazing opportunity
to spend five weeks studying at Vassar College. The Vassar Summer
Exploring Transfer Program is an excellent opportunity for community
college students to immerse themselves in the residential college
life. Although I felt a bit isolated at times, I loved being able
to step away from the city and drown myself in books. I went into
the program unsure of my abilities and a bit more than sure that I
might fail. The program created an environment where I was able to
get feedback from my teachers and my peers. What I came away with
was more confidence and a stronger sense of my writing and ideas.
I feel very lucky to have been a part of this program. I have always
had crazy ideas that I liked to rant on and on to my friends about,
but I never felt like I was making sense. I couldn't quite get out
what I wanted to say. After this summer I feel more concise, more
focused and more confident.
College Discovery is the place that made all this possible; without
the help of the tutors, counselors and advisors at CD I would not
have been able to get into the Vassar program. CD helped me step up
to the challenge of my first and second semesters at BMCC, which gave
me the boost into Vassar.
