The 1st Annual BMCC SoTL Forum and Workshop
November 10 and 17, 2017
Join us at the 1st Annual BMCC Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Forum, an opportunity for BMCC faculty to showcase their existing SoTL work, and for faculty new to SoTL to learn about how to design their own SoTL project. Our theme this year is Teaching as Research (TAR), a subset of SoTL that focuses primarily on one’s own classroom practices and improving one’s own students’ learning.
November 10 - SoTL Forum: Teaching as Research A showcase of SoTL projects underway/completed by BMCC faculty members from the 2015 cohort of the Teaching Academy. All BMCC faculty are invited to present their research findings and to discuss projects currently underway. This will take the form of concurrent, research-oriented presentations, as well as concurrent poster sessions and/or multimedia focus groups.
November 17 - Teaching as Research Workshop A day-long workshop on Teaching as Research. Participants will walk faculty through the process of developing a TAR project. Faculty participants will identify one or more potential research questions that they are interested in exploring about their teaching and their students’ learning. They will develop a framework for how to explore those questions and a plan for how to implement that framework. This workshop will be led by Kimberly Williams, an educational consultant, a teaching support specialist at Cornell University, and the author of Doing Research to Improve Teaching and Learning: A Guide for University Faculty. She is the organizer of the Teaching as Research National Conference and Train the Trainer Pre-conference Workshop held at Cornell.
