A presentation of the art and photography of two important artists who were influenced by environmental justice. Chilean artist Alejandra Prieto resorted to using coal in her art because coal was a big industry in Chile in the 19th century and early 20th century.
Finnish Sami artist Marja Helander's suggestive photographs and videos of Northern landscape from Sami areas in Scandinavia and Russia feature bedecked landscapes, horizontal lines of distant mountains and vast expanses of bare terrain in contrast to the depth of darkness and lonely factory buildings. What is to happen with those industrial landscapes stained by pollution? How do people fit into this environment? Students will learn about the work of these two artists and how they use art to raise awareness about environmental degradation.
