Women's Herstory Month: Beyonce Rising - "Lemonade" and the Politics of Black Female Empowerment

March 8
4:00 PM — 6:00 PM
Room S341 at 199 Chambers St.

A screening and discussion of Beyonce's best-selling visual album "Lemonade", which since its debut in April 2016 has generated spirited debate about artistic representations of intersectional feminism, police brutality, false consciousness,  and cultural appropriation. The feminist theorist bell hooks offered a powerful critique of the popular response to the album as a survivor story, as the story of a woman scorned and rising up from the ashes of betrayal, which opens up vital questions of contemporary relevance. How can a woman, particularly a Black woman, "rise"? What are the terms by which women are allowed to accumulate power within the context of white, capitalist, heteronormative patriarchy?
