This workshop for students will demonstrate how historians overcome the challenges of finding women's experiences in archival sources. Given that for many periods of historical study, the majority of archival sources were left by men, historians interested in women's lives have to learn to read against the grain, and especially learn to read silences--what is not written.
In this workshop, Professor Warren will give a short (10 minute) lecture on the problem, demonstrate how she has used primary documents to get closer to the women hidden in the texts and then ask students to begin analyzing primary texts themselves.
