This event is an homage to the Cuban American performance artist, sculptor and painter Ana Mendieta who died at the age of 35 on September 1985 when she fell from a 33 story apartment onto the roof of a deli in the Village. Best known for her "earth-body" artwork, Mendieta married the minimalist sculptor Carl Andre eight months before she died, and her death has been full of controversy until today.
This event coincides with the 30th anniversary of her death includes a documentary about her life, including testimonies of family members and friends by Cuban artist Nereida García Fernández, and a literary reading and discussion by Cuban writer and Mendieta’s friend Sonia Rivera-Valdés. The stories –Ana en cuatro tiempos- are based on Ana Mendieta’s life.
